Question on the mounting position of a telechron motor

I'm working on an old Sound Design model 3220 Clock Radio with a telechron motor. I took it apart and oiled the motor because it was a bit noisy. While putting it back together, I noticed there were two different positions the motor could be mounted. I tried running the clock with the motor in each position and it made more noise with the "top" facing upwards. How much does It matter if the "top" is facing downwards? Will it damage it? There is also a green dot on the back of the motor. Does this have anything to with the direction it should be mounted? I do not know what position it was originally in.

Here is a photo showing the green dot. It is off center and seems to align with the drive gear on the other side.
