The Panasonic RC-6236 Weather FM-AM Clock Radio - Sleek design, great sound.
The Panasonic RC-6236 featured here, operates on 120V 60Hz and measures 11 ¾†in length, 3 ½†in height, and 7 ¾†wide. It was manufacturered by Matshushita Electrical Industrial Co., LTD and Made in Japan. The clock sports volume, tuning and other side knobs flush with the brown simulated wood grain plastic cabinet contributing to it's sleek design, with a metal plate under the top selector knobs and a chrome stripe around the plastic clock face completing the stylish 70s look.
The single 8 ohm, 4 inch speaker produces a surprisingly rich and sufficiently loud sound for the radio and alarm functions. The clock includes a "high" and "low" tone selector on the top which seems to give the radio either more treble or bass sound respectively as selected. The radio tunes FM and AM stations in very well, and is able to pick up local weather broadcasts in the 162.400 to 162.550 MHz frequency range. Once the top right selector is set to "Weather" the tuning for the weather station is located on the back side of the clock.
An incandescent bulb passing through a blue filter (to make the light whiter) illuminates the digits from the top.
The tuner dial is opaque green plastic with a backlight
The Inside Details
The Panasonic RC-6223 is relatively well made, some of the earlier clocks had more metal components. And sadly, this model does suffer from the tendency for the internal plastic mounts to break due to the plastic becoming brittle. The clock mechanism is very similar to those used in the more famous, RC-6015 and the RC-6010, and curiously, the flywheel on the clock motor has the swirl pattern sticker that shows through on other models on the clock face. This particular model does not have the wheel visible, so using the motor with this probably was a matter of part availability. Unfortunately, in this particular clock the sticker had disintegrated interfering with smooth operation of the clock motor (remedied by carefully removing the sticker residual and flushing the motor with a solvent).
