    Copal T-11 alarm not working

Hello friends! I need some help. I'm restoring a nice Copal T-11 but can't get the alarm to work properly. Electrically it all works fine but the problem is mechanical. At the set time there is the expected click but the lever that should engage the micro switch does not move.

In order to investigate I have taken it largely apart but I still can't figure out how it should work.

At the left there is the alarm wheel with a little insert (A) that is held in place by a screw. As I understand it, the insert should run between the white wheel B and black wheel C. Between A and B is a spring pushing the two apart. Inside wheel B and C (not visible from the outside) there is a spring pulling these two together. When the insert is between B and C it pushes them apart. At the set time it reaches a sharp drop-off and this allows B and C to move together again. I expected this to also allow lever D to move to the left and release the lever on the micro-switch E (buzzer is on when the switch is not pressed). But since the spring between A and B is way stronger than the internal spring in the micro-switch this does not happen and the micro-switch stays pressed.

Anybody any idea? Am I missing a part? (Seems quite unlikely since the screws still had that loctite-like stuff on them).
I could imagine it could work if there was a spacer between B and the hour wheel but there isn't any.

Another question is how to adjust the timing of the alarm? At the moment it fires about 5 minutes before the set time. I can't see to a way to change this apart from repositioning all the hour tiles.

I have one or two of these for spares, not sure if the alarm part is complete but when I find some time in the near future, I will pull one apart to see if it looks the same and report back here.

With regard to changing the time of the alarm, 5 minutes off is odd... I think I have done what you are proposing at some point in the past but I have also made some adjustments in the mechanical part with another clock but that was off way more than 5 minutes so it made sense.

Today tried if my idea to add a spacer between the white wheel B and the hour wheel would work and it did!
I added three washers with a total thickness of 1.4 mm. This thickness needs to be quite precise as the insert A needs to land between the two angled surfaces on B and C. This leaves only a very small margin.
Next I had to fine tune the lever D by bending it to make it open and close the micro switch.
Somehow all this also changed the timing: instead of 5 minutes too early the alarm is now only 2 minutes early. This is not too bad given the age of this clock and possible effect of wear.

Still strange though there seems to be no way to adjust the timing. Maybe that's just the way this design worked.

wow, so it does appear something was missing? Either from the factory or something has been in there before, we will never know. I will still try to take a look in one of my parts clocks when I find the time...
