Seth Thomas Flip Clock No Longer Running ["Wall Maid" Model 2472]

    Hi all,

I thrifted a ~1971 Seth Thomas flip clock a few months ago. I cleaned it up, repaired some of the flip cards, and it was running fine. I was pleasantly surprised. However, recently it has stopped running altogether. Although it's plugged in, the motor isn't running at all. I'm planning on taking it to get repaired but I was wondering if there is anything I could try, or if there are parts I could replace, in order to do this myself. I'm quite a novice, this is my first clock, so I'm not sure how advanced of a repair I could do, but I'm willing to give it a shot. I love this clock! I hope to have it for a long time.

    Thank you.

I recently had a similar issue with my Seth Thomas 821. I had replaced the bulb, did a general cleaning and it ran fine for a week or so and then stopped running. I ended up opening up the sealed motor case (not nearly as hard as I feared), lubed the gear bushings with lightweight clock oil, and reassembled. It works perfectly now and is quieter as well.

Unfortunately, I did not take any pictures but this thread helped: https://www.flipclockfans.com/forum/...uldn-t-save-it

I have a couple of the Seth Thomas flip clocks and I like their build quality. The gear trains are mostly metal and they use real glass instead of scratch prone plastic fronts. Good luck with yours.

Thanks so much for your advice! I'm glad you were able to get it running. They're such cool clocks.

Great thread. I have purchased apparently a "wall made" with blown motor. The winding assembly was bouncing around the aluminum spindle and I don't think that is right. The seller on Ebay assured it was working perfectly...Well under observation under my video microscope, the windings were in multiple pieces! So looking for a nasty cosmetics, but working 821, 819 etc to pull the motor out of and put into mine. My gear train is smooth, and working great. Cosmetics are 9.5 out of 10. Agreed, the build quality and use of real glass is super!
