How warm should a transformer be?

I have a clock with a transformer that is very warm while on. I can hold my hand on it, but if it were just a little hotter, it would be uncomfortable. Is this anything to worry about?

What kind of transformer is it? I am assuming an external one? Is it for the voltage? Do you have a make/model or perhaps a picture of the device?

It is the internal transformer of a JCPenny 3785 clock radio. It looks like the transformers found in a lot of 70s clock radios I have. I have just noticed that some of the heat may be coming from the Telechron motor assembly next to it. The coil gets too hot to touch, which has me worried now. I did test 3 other telechron clocks and all of them got very hot.
