    Sankyo Model 451

I've recently obtained one of these and wondered if anyone had experience of them? The mechanism and motor appear to work but there does seem to be an issue, whereby the main cogwheel which generates a ticking sound and then drives the actual rolling mechanism seems to not want to stay in position. It works fine when the clock is orientated vertically and gravity is keeping it in place, but when the clock is horizontal it seems to work itself free after a short while. There doesn't appear to be any kind of "stay" to keep it in place,

Does this ring a bell with anyone? Many thanks in advance for any information or advice

It sounds like your Sankyo has a similar problem to spiderman6's Sankyo 401 in this thread:
    https://www.flipclockfans.com/forum/...ital-401/page2

See the second video in his post #23 or on youtube:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1rY...ature=emb_logo

A similar, if not the same, Sankyo 423 D mech is shown working in this video:

I've got my AWA cyclometer open at the moment and it appears to have a very similar Sankyo mechanism to all of the above, hence my interest, mine is working ok, for now

      Hi David,
Many thanks for your reply. The 451 is quite different unfortunately - the motor and mechanism are in series - effectively in a line, with the offending cogwheel right at the end (the larger one to the left in the photo). It looks like it just lifts itself away from the main motor cog (smaller cog to the right) since it's not fixed in place. Very strange - the only way I can see to fix this is to attempt to glue it in place, but I'm about 1% happy at the prospect!

From where I'm sitting, and that's about 11,000 miles away, it looks like the end of the motor gear is worn off.

If that 2nd large gear is on a swing arm maybe it disconnects if there's too much friction or a jam up in the rest of the mech?

Maybe I should let someone more knowledgeable get a word in

Personally, I'd rather have someone make a suggestion than the question just sit gathering dust.

This is one of those things that'd I'd like to get my hands on ... just to try to solve the puzzle. It makes me wonder if this is supposed to lift away (maybe when setting the clock) but move back into position after adjusting. If so, there may be a spring missing on the other side of the clock?? I'm just grabbing at straws here because I've never seen one of these in person.
If that's not it, ... does the wheel push in farther towards the clock? if so maybe there's a missing e-clip?

There's a video of a repair to a Sankyo 402d, the motor and gears look similar to yours, but not the layout.
In the comments someone says that the motor is an intermatic motor also used in pool timers etc, apparently the motor pinion gear commonly wears out/teeth strip.

A seller on eBay.com.au is selling both those gears, but they may be for 60Hz power as the seller is in the USA. I seem to remember you're in the UK so maybe there's a seller on eBay UK also selling them, might be worth a look.

Interesting, thank you, Mackey - I actually have one of those "ball clocks" though not an Arrow branded one (at least I don't think so - mine's just badged "Time Machine"). I think you and David are both right in that the main motor gear has worn just enough that the larger wheel is allowed to slide off it as it spins. Perhaps a new motor gear would be a tighter fit and prevent this, but it still seems strange that there's nothing else to prevent it from working itself free. One would think it would be retained in some way as it's absolutely fundamental to the functionality . I'll do some digging now that you have very helpfully provided me with a springboard... Thank you!

Hopefully, this video might be of use to someone in the future... it shows how these Intermetic motors are actually used in common timers and there's maybe the possibility of cannibalising for that all-important cog wheel:

You can find these motors on ebay indeed. I know of one Solari clock which has the same motor. I have one of these for parts with a broken motor, I was thinking of buying one of these motors as an experiment indeed to see whether it actually fits.

I think I may need to be patient and wait for one to come up in the UK or try to find an alternative over here. If I bought via Ebay the customs charges and shipping cost renders it almost unthinkable, given the value of the clock. All the more true if all I want is that wheel rather than the whole unit

I do remember seeing a repairkit, including this wheel on ebay, but I might be mistaken...
